There is no more powerful way to deliver this message than to let John 3:16 speak for itself. Unless a man or woman is born of the Spirit, born from above, they cannot be saved, because they are attempting to reach God the wrong way. All this, however, was abstract, whether as to the nature of the Word or as to the place of the Christian. The Spirit of God uses that word; it is thus invariably in conversion. He has life; the man who disobeys has not, and while he disobeys shall not see life, for he cannot be a subject of a kingdom to whose laws he refuses allegiance. It implies, also, that it will continue to remain on him. This is the same idea explained in Scriptures such as John 3:18-19, Romans 1:20, and Romans 3:11. Not Jacob was there, but the Son of God in nothing but grace; and thus to the Samaritan woman, not to the teachers of Israel, are made those wonderful communications which unfold to us with incomparable depth and beauty the real source, power, and character of that worship which supersedes, not merely schismatic and rebellious Samaria, but Judaism at its best.
