I would like to start out by saying that i am extremely annoyed by the two main ways this blend seems to be reviewed.. on the one hand, there is the reactionary camp who compare their current experience to the echoes of memories of long lost years.. then there is a progressive camp that seems all too willing to embrace and wax poetic on something they have recently discovered. For those who like how the Latakia played with the Turkish, and both were supported by Virginias, smoke either GLPease's Westminster, or Cornell & Diehl's 968R (Red Odessa). Opinions are to Balkan Sobranie what armpits are to Vishnu. I loved this classic, and will always remember what a special experience it was to have some. One cannot regret smoking this, it really is a great smoke. I shall give you my evaluation in a few days need I say more about the experience of the first bowl this morning. Comparisons to Balkan Sasieni are obvious due to the tin art but Sobranie is miles ahead in flavor and depth. It probably was the best Balkan mixture long ago and it's a shame it disappeared. The Orientals (Macedonia being one of them) provide a lot of earth, wood, floralness, a light dry sourness and buttery sweetness, along with a little spice and leather as a supporting player. This spectacular blend stands on top of the rostrum of the Hall of Fame, together with famous 759, and only few others. Buttery is a nice description. Who knows? I also like the shag cut because it burns easily without many relights and leaves a gray ash in the bottom of the bowl without excessive moisture contamination. Germain, not the "Real McCoy" or even the 2005 Gallaher version for that matter. Let the smoke slowly out of your mouth and inhale through your nose and you'll see what I mean, all the hype about this tobacco is true and th ats a rare thing, when it's available again, make sure you get some, because out of the hundreds of different tobaccos I've tried over the years this would have to be one of, if not the best I've ever had, just remember, if your not into latakia, don't bother, blue smokes a tanging, enjoy. As such it is an oriental fronted mixture balanced with a good amount of Latakia, where the Latakia never seems to take over. 4. The strength is a couple of steps short of medium. Based on certain similarities of taste I suspect that Balkan Sobranie may have also contained some Maryland, but likely no more than ten percent. I find Nightcap, Penzance and Black Mallory to be more complex. This is by far the best English Balkan blend ever made including the suppose Gallagher version. because that was the last of it. This is due to the blend's extremely limited production. Are there better bl ends? Lat is definitely there but not forward. The mystique surrounding this blend from years past is well deserved. Wow. Not so heavy, incredibly smooth tobacco, giving a gentle sweetness and a dry, salty smoking that reminds me of Syrian Latakia.It was smoked easily until the end of the bowl. If I was given the difficult choice of one tin, either TBS or 759, I would go for TBS. After waiting for over a year, I finally got a chance to try it. We're all poorer for the loss. The latakias has utterly melded and permeated the rest of the blend. The best of the very best. Well, it's nothing like the original one, but it still stands above the mass of English mixtures. Being too young to have ever bought this over the counter, I felt I had to try the blend that everyone in the pipe club lamented they could not buy anymore. 1.75 oz. I try to pick a time when I can set aside an hour to sit quietly and enjoy this fine tobacco. After a few puffs, the tobacco flavors begin to meld & it just keeps getting better until the very end. Included were 6 tins of the old 759 and 3 tins of the #10. Joe worked closely with GBD on developing new shapes, e.g., #263 extra long Canadian, the ?glass-blasted? That's about all I can say. This doesn't mean that there aren't better Balkans or latakia mixtures: it just means that Original still has something that makes it different and immediately recognizable, and which is missing from ALL other imitations. The outstanding characteristic of this blend, to me, is the complexity and changing nature through the course of the bowl. I smoked it constantly from 1975 through the early eighties, sporadically since then till it's disappearance. I cannot compare this to the original, but on its own merit, this was one great smoke.
